The route most often taken is to leave from the boat ramp (red arrow) then head toward the dark green island. There will be a few channel markers to lead you out to the entrance, the furthest sign has a number 5 on it and will just before the entrance to the Little River. Once you go through the entrance you will see two white buoys, take a left at this point traveling up the Little River. As you travel this direction you will be going against the current, but it will be minimal. Depending on water level you will come to a frequented local sandbar where people tend to stop and hang out. The sandbar is where Euchee Creek meets The Little River. Beyond the sandbar you will come to Champions Retreat Golf Course. Continue going until you reach the top of the island. If you would like to turn around and float back the way you came, you can do so at anytime, otherwise take a right at the top and float back down the length of the island in the main part of Savannah River. At the bottom of the island you will notice that it cuts back up to the right taking you back to the entrance to Bettys Branch, where Oa Riverside Rentals is located. If at any point you are crossing under what is a two lane highway (Furys Ferry Bridge also known as HWY 28) then you have passed the bottom of the island and need to paddle back up. There are train tracks that you will cross under on both the Little River and the Savannah River. The whole trip around the island, back to shore is 6.2 miles and takes 2-3 hours depending on your speed. Sometimes longer if you are having a real good time relaxing! German Island is located between the two rivers and is privately owned and home to lots of wildlife. You are advised to stay off any private property and golf course. In the event of an emergency, call 911.
